If only I could depict heartbreak in such a compelling, organized way.

This video has been making its rounds on the internet this week. Dancer Andrew Winghart, who has also choreographed works to songs by Kanye West and Lorde, created this latest offering to Justin Timberlake’s 2002 song “Cry Me a River.” The video features So You Think You Can Dance finalist George Lawrence II as the central point dancing with and around a troupe of 36 ladies who embody the figurative river.

Someone once told me that contemporary dancers make amazing hip-hop dancers and watching this video it is easy to see why. The piece is still very much a technical contemporary work but at various moments, the dancers move into isolations and intricate footwork that perfectly match the beat and tone of the song.

This video proves that:

1. There is strength in numbers.
2. Compelling pieces can be choreographed to popular music (trust me, there are some people out there who doubt that).
3. Ripples, when done right, are EVERYTHING and can never be over used.
